Movie Review: Hair Brained.

Posted on at

Thirteen year old Eli Pettifog is a genius. Today is his first day of college. Eli wanted to go to Harvard but they did not accept him. He drags his duffel bag down the stairs and places it in his mother's car. His mother drives him to the bus station.

Eli's hair is bushy and wild. He says he keeps his hair like this to protect his brain. He arrives at Whittman College where he would prefer not to be. It is not what one of the best colleges around. His neighbor in the dormitory is a man named Leo Searly. He lives across the hall from Eli. He tells Eli to brush his hair; advice that Eli will get from others.

Eli joins a collegiate mastermind team which participates in tournaments wherein they have to answer trivia questions. Before Eli joined, the team never won a tournament. Eli's primary goal is to beat the team from the college that rejected him: Harvard.

The movie "Hair Brained" is a comedy about a boy coming of age. Eli has absolutely no social skills. And he is just becoming interested in girls. He is bullied because of his size.

Some parts of this movie reminded my wife of 'Dumb and Dumber.' Other parts were genuinely funny. The acting is okay. The language is unsuitable for children. The story line is not plausible and the ending is contrived.

All this yields a movie which is unsuitable for children and at times too silly for adults. Personally I enjoyed the silliness and the comedy in this movie.

Opinions about comedies are very subjective. Hence you may feel differently about this movie then I do. The best advice I could give you is that if you think you might like a comedy about a hair brained genius (Eli) and a forty something year old irresponsible loser (Leo), give this movie a try.
