Movie Review: The Fourth Kind

Posted on at

Dr Abigail Tyler is a psychologist. She has several patients who have common experiences. They wake up in the middle of the night to see a owl in their window. Each patient states the same thing. "The white owl was looking at me. It was there for hours." The owl was not scared of people. The patients saw the owl often. One patient claims he saw the owl when he was a child. The experience of the patients included much more than they were able to recall. They have to be put under a state of hypnosis to reveal what they experienced. As the movie progresses, the hypnotic therapy sessions reveal horrifying evidence of alien abductions. An alien abduction is a close encounter of the fourth kind. For me, the climax was not satisfying. I wanted to know more about the aliens.

The movie goes back and forth between the interviews with the older Dr Tyler and the dramatization of the experiences of Dr Tyler when she was younger. Hence two different actors play the part of Doctor Tyler: One is an older woman and the other is a younger woman. However it is obvious that they are not the same woman. Their voices are different and their facial features are different.

The problem with this movie is that it purports itself to be a true story. If the events that took place in this movie really happened, it would have made headlines throughout the U.S. It would have been all over the Internet. This movie is fiction and lawsuits were pressed against the producers of this movie. A simple search on the web will result in articles detailing those lawsuits.

Milla Jovovich does an excellent job as the character named Dr Tyler and parts of the story are very disturbing. This movie contains gore and graphic violence. It also contains vulgar language.

I am glad that I did not watch this movie on a huge theater screen. But there are some scenes that startled me even though I was watching it on a 17 inch monitor.

Many scenes are too intense for young children. This movie is for older teens and adults. Despite all the flaws listed above, I still think this movie is well worth watching.
