MUSIC OF LATIN AMERICA

Latin American Music encompasses rhythms and styles, it has an incorporation of four elements: their music style, geography, cultural background of the artist and language. The first of those encapsulates all music styles generated in Latin countries such as salsa, merengue, tango, bossa nova, and bachata: as well as other styles derived from a more mainstream genre, such as Latin pop, rock, jazz and reggaeton.

 

Popular Music Styles By Country

ARGENTINA

  • Tango - (possibly from Latin tangere, meaning "touch") is a partner dance that originated in the 1890s along the Río de la Plata, the natural border between Uruguay and Argentina, and soon spread to the rest of the world
  • Chacarera  - The Chacarera is a dance and music originating in Argentina. It is a genre of folk music that, for many Argentines, serves as a rural counterpart to the cosmopolitan imagery of the Tango
  • Milonga - is a musical  and dance genre that originated in the Río de la Plata areas of Argentina and Uruguay
  • Zamba – it is the traditional dance of Argentina.
  • Argentin Rock –is composed of Argentine bands or artist, in the Spanish Language.

BOLIVIA

  • Latin Jazz – is a jazz with latin American rhythms.
  • Axé Music - is a popular music genre originating in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil approximately in 1986, fusing different Afro-Caribbean genres, such as Marcha, Reggae, and Calypso.
  • Bossa Nova - is a genre of Brazilian music, which developed and was popularized in the 1950s and 1960s and is today one of the best-known Brazilian music genres abroad.
  • Tropicalismo - is a Brazilian artistic movement that arose in the late 1960s. It encompassed art forms such as theatre, poetry, and music.
  • Samba - is a Brazilian dance and musical genre originating in Bahia, Brazil.
  • Lambada - is a dance music from Pará, Brazil.

 

 

CHILE

  • Andean Music  -(Folklore music) is a group of styles of music from the Andes region in South America.
  • Cueca - is a family of musical styles and associated dances from Argentina, Chile and Bolivia. In Chile, the cueca holds the status of national dance, where it was officially selected on September 18, 1979.
  • Nueva Cancion - is a movement and genre within Latin American and Iberian music of folk music, folk-inspired music and socially committed music.

CUBA

  • Cha-Cha - is the name of a dance of Cuban origin.It is danced to the music of the same name introduced by Cuban composer and violinist Enrique Jorrín in 1953.
  • Mambo  -(music) a Cuban musical form and (dance) a dance corresponding to mambo music.
  • Rumba  - is a family of percussive rhythms, song and ballroom dance that originated in Cuba as a combination of various musical traditions.
  • Salsa ­- a fusion of Cuban musical styles based on the Cuban son , (dance) the dance forms corresponding to salsa music.

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

  • Merengue - is a type of music and dance originating in the Dominican Republic which has become one of the most popular genres throughout Latin America and major cities in the United States.
  • Dominican Rock - (known as "Rock Dominicano" in Dominican Republic), is rock music created by Dominican groups and soloists.
  • Bachata - is a Latino genre of music that originated in the Dominican Republic in the early parts of the 20th century with the African descendants in the country and spread to other parts of Latin America and Mediterranean Europe
