Online Film Distribution: Bringing Movies to People Wherever They Are

Posted on at

Are social networks becoming a new standard on the Internet? Yesterday I read an article asking if they were the new search engine. I have also seen a video saying that 48% of young Americans find out about news through Facebook. And today, I’ve watched the first theatrical preview released on Twitter before anywhere else. We already know that a part of our life is mainly on social networks now, at least for a lot of us, as a communication tool. But now we use those platforms to read the news, search information or watch a movie trailer. What’s next?

The movie in question is Super 8. Beside the fact that I may not be objective about the story (a movie produced by Steven Spielberg , directed by "Lost" creator J.J. Abrams, and with Kyle Chandler as one of the main actors… how bad can that be?), I wanted to focus on Paramount’s promotion technique here. Big now realize that social media is playing a big role in society and affects each industry. If we recall the case of Toy Story 3, Disney and Pixar successfully used Facebook to promote the animated film and get people’s attention, targeting specific demographics.

The idea is to go viral. If you watch – and like - a trailer in a movie theater, you will probably mention it to your friends next time you see them. If you watch it online on a regular website, you may send the link via email to your friends. If you watch it on Facebook or Twitter, a simple retweet or click on a ‘Like’ button, and you just shared it with at least hundreds of people in a second. Social media is a powerful tool because information has the potential to reach quickly millions of people. No wonder big studios now use this opportunity.

But they are not the first. Trailers and independent movies are being promoted on social networks everyday by filmmakers, their entourage, or online film distribution platforms. At Film Annex, we are lucky to watch movies every day and able to spread the word about them thanks to social media. The idea is to bring the best movies to people, wherever they are.
