Pakistan: A 70 year Journey.

Pakistan is an Islamic republic born on the holiest night (27th Ramzan) of holy month of Ramzan in August 1947. The idea that lead to creation of Pakistan was 2 nation theory that states that Hindus who were in majority in sub-continent and Muslims minority but ruled Sub Continent for about 800 years are two separate nations and after departure of British rulers from India Muslims cannot live in a Hindu dominated country. Although today Pakistan is much different from what it was supposed to be by its founder’s desires. Pakistan was supposed to be an Islamic republic with government ruling under Islamic law and become a role model for all other nations of the world in commerce, education, progress, justice and all other departments of a state. On the birth of this new nation neither implementing Islamic laws in government was so easy nor difficulties were gone away after getting independence. A struggle of survival started. Pakistan faced very serious issue after its birth such as issue of about 12 million migrants, boundary issues with India (Kashmir and Punjab boundaries) and Afghanistan and   and shortage of resources and funds to run a government but Thanks God Pakistan survived and progressed very fast in first decade of its creation.

After the death of Quaid e Azam just a year after independence and assassination of Prime minister Liaqat Ali Khan Pakistan could not mange to get good civilian leadership and Armed forces took control of government starting with marshal law.  Ayub khan was first military man to rule Pakistan although he was a dictator but under his decade long rule Pakistan progressed fast and achieved title of Asian tiger. Pakistan bravely fought and successfully defended itself against sudden Indian attack in 1965. Ayub Khan’s reign came to an end in late 60s after a strong anti-Ayub movement by political parties of Pakistan. And a new Martial law was enforced in Pakistan by Yahya khan. General elections were held in 1970 and a dark period of Pakistan’s history started. Majeeb ur Rehman got mandate in east Pakistan while Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto won most of the seats of assembly in west Pakistan. A civil unrest started in east Pakistan lead by Makti Bahni and Indian intelligence agencies which lead to a full scale civil war in east Pakistan and 1971 war of India Pakistan. East Pakistan got separated after a 9 months long war and a new country named Bangladesh emerged.

General Yahya resigned and Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto occupied President’s seat and latter became Prime Minister of Pakistan. Bhutto nationalized most of the industries of Pakistan, gave complete constitution to Pakistan, Qadiani’s were declared non-Muslims by national assembly of Pakistan and military operated against anti-Pakistani Baloch Movements in Baluchistan.

Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto also faced an anti-Bhutto movement and at last his government was finished by Pakistan’s third military ruler “General Zia ul Haq.” Zia ul Haq was followed by Benazir Bhutto (daughter of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto who became first lady prime Minister of any Muslim country in the world. Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto was hanged by Zia administration accused of a murder. Pakistan witnessed on and off democratic governments until 4th martial law was enforced in the country by Pervez Musharraf in 1999.

Pakistan also faced international sanctions after successfully declaring its atomic power on 28 may 1998 and became 1st Muslim and 7th international state to own nuclear power. Current century started an new era in Pakistan like whole of the world Pakistan also faced changes after 9/11 attack. Pakistan Muslim neighbour Afghanistan was forced to fight and Pakistan’s administration helped America to achieve its goals in Afghanistan. As a result, Pakistan entered in a terror war and still fighting at the cost of thousands of citizens and billions of rupees.

In 2008 Pakistan again entered a democratic spell and a democratic elected government was established after 2008 elections. Pakistan People Party succeeded to hold prime minister’s seat. First time in the history of Pakistan an elected government completed its 5 years term setting stage for 2013 general elections. This time Muslim league Nawaz got mandate to hold prime minister’s office and Nawaz Sharif became prime minister of Pakistan for third time. Nawaz government started china Pakistan corridor project with Chinese investment that may brighten Pakistan’s economy in future. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was disqualified by supreme court verdict on Panama leaks case. Now Shahid Khaqan Abbasi is Prime minister of Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz.

Although Pakistan has faced many ups and downs in its brief 70 years history but still it holds the potential to prove itself as an key important country of World. Sixth largest military with highly trained solders and piolets is protecting Pakistan. Pakistan has high youth potential and God willingly Pakistan will see brighter future.
