Reviewing Dead All Night

Posted on at

Dead All Night is much in the tradition of Mad Max, Escape from New York and The Warriors. It is a violent, blood filled action film in the style of, and in tribute to, the over the top, uncensored classics of the 80's.

The story is set in a broody, shadowy, post apocalyptic future. The World as we know it has changed - some parts of the Country are tightly controlled by government, but there are lawless wastelands, free of government rule. Both sides are jealously guarded by their keepers - as long as no one attempts to cross into each other's zone, there is no trouble. But, should the borders be breached, death is sure to follow. Death by guns on the government side, and death by crude, but effective weapons (large sticks, baseball bats, rocks and bricks, chainsaws and nail guns), on the lawless side.

These lawless areas are run by an anarchist brute, known as The Veteran (Kyle William),

and his vicious gang of leering and blood-thirsty neo-punk-goons.  The Veteran and his unsavoury gang have somehow managed to build a doomsday device to end our world forever. The government catches wind of this device and, in order to avoid the destruction of the free world, must enlist the help of an ex-special forces agent, Gavin Green, gone rogue, and now a death-row inmate, (played with enthusiastic abandon by Ryan Barrett).

Green  must infiltrate the lawless zone, retrieve or destroy the device, and bring back alive or kill The Veteran, and bring back proof of his success.

In order to hook the recalcitrant Green, the government agents (brilliantly played by Robert Nolan and Breanna TeBoekhorst) are tasked with persuading him by offering him freedom, a full pardon and a new life. Green is less than cooperative until he hears that The Veteran is in the picture, with whom he seems to have some history.  Nolan and TeBoekhorst bring a convincing "good cop bad cop" feel to their parts, with Nolan playing the quiet and reasonable one and TeBoekhorst playing the completely manic, sadistic and over-the-top character who screams angry threats and expletives at Green while crashing her fist onto the desk.

Ryan Barrett brings a cheeky and overconfident arrogance to the Gavin Green role, smart-cracking the agents rudely as he slinks off toward the border of the lawless zone dressed in his newly acquired disguise of  "lawless zone" clothing, which he clearly despises, and shows equal disgust at not being given a gun.

sets the tone for this alternate world that Green must enter, starting with the clothing he is given.  After several skirmishes with the various border "guards", all ending in death for the guards, Green manages to enter the outer perimeter of The Veteran's Lair where he is confronted by a series of even meaner and tougher guards who are dispatched by Pixie, a nasty associate of The Veteran.

These guards are meaner than the first bunch and come variously equipped with motorcycles and ATVs, which they aim directly at Green with murderous intent.

Green does not come out unscathed, sporting various bloody wounds (kudos to makeup artists Alana Lee and Alexandria Townshed),

but using his Special Forces combat training he nullifies them.  Then, using only a cudgel, and various "weapons" (nail gun, chainsaw) he has acquired from the defeated guards, he strides victoriously into the inner sanctum of The Veteran, where he assures the gaily dancing and drinking crowd that he will be pleased to kill them all if they get between him and his prey.  Again, Betheny McLeod's imaginative costuming and set design carries you into a future world - part sci/fi part fantasy and part horror.

Dead All Night is a fun tongue-in-cheek nod to the crazy action movies of the '80s, presented with obvious pleasure by all involved. We say go for it and we wish Chris and the gang all the luck possible with the Festival circuit, we feel sure they will do well.
