Saint Lucia

Saint Lucia is an island nation of the Lesser Antilles in the Caribbean (Caribbean in European Portuguese), near Martinique, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Barbados. His name was given by Christopher Columbus, who was there in 1502.

The first to populate the island of St. Lucia were the Arawak in the third century BC, which were later driven out by the Caribs (Caribbean in European Portuguese). Spanish and English tried to occupy the island but found strong resistance from the native Caribs. In 1660, the French managed to settle there, beginning a long dispute with England that lasted 150 years

Because of this, the ownership flag in Santa Lucia was changed fourteen consecutive times. Through the Treaty of Paris in 1814, Britain finally took control of the island of St. Lucia, although the period when she was under French domination has left marks, including in local language himself, a patois resulting from the mixture of dialects African with French.

Was developed on the island by the British of the cane sugar cultivation and subsequently the introduction of cocoa. Tropical fruits are also produced as a banana - its flagship product - and the coconut.

Between 1959 and 1962, the island was a province of the West Indies Federation. Later, self-government was awarded in 1967 and independence to December 13, 1978, as member of the Community of Nations (Commonwealth). Currently, the government-general is in charge of Perlette Louisy, with Prime Minister Stephenson King.5
