Shanghai people relieve stress through intense meditation

Shanghai residents are resorting to two days of complete isolation and silence, in an intense meditation session to relieve daily stress.

While hundreds applied for the new program at Shanghai’s famous Jade Buddha Temple on Wednesday, 70 secured a spot, according to China News.

During the session, participants are led through meditation by Buddhist masters, and will also eat and sleep as the monks do.

They remain isolated from the public, while digital products including cellphones are confiscated until the end.

Meanwhile, they are not allowed to speak during the course, with each wearing a card that reads “No Talking”.

“I’m wondering whether I will go insane without my phone and staying quiet for two days,” China News cited a female participant surnamed Su who works in an advertising company.

As pressure from modern life mounts, Chinese white collar workers are finding new ways to de-stress, with activities such as painting, yoga and meditation becoming more and more popular.
