As with similarity named baseball series , the SO - KEI  REGATTA traces its roots to a match between WASEDA UNIVERSITY and KEIO UNIVERSITY .

 

First run in 1905 , the event is held each year on the SUMIDA RIVER ( starting just upstream of the RYOGOKU BRIDGE and ending just upstream of the SAKURA BRIDGE ) in mid April .
