Spring time and why I love Judo

Posted on at

www.SportAnnex.com Hey everyone, Spring is in the air (and on the ground, in the form of rain) here in Syracuse NY! While this season brings about change to many things, for me it signifies they coming of what we call "tournament season" in Judo. This is the time of year when there are several very good tournaments in the northeast region, one every two weeks or so, all culminating in the Senior Nationals tournament in the first week of May. This brings me to why I love judo; a match can end at any time. While a wrestling match can end at any time with a pin, this is not often at higher level of competition, and it is certainly not as exciting as in judo when a match is ended in a single move. In judo, a match actually only goes until a player scored ippon, or "one" point. There are three main ways to do this, by cleanly throwing your opponent to his or her back with force, pinning your opponent (somewhat different than in wrestling)or but forcing them to submit via a choke or joint lock. The most common occurrence of these forms of ippon is by throw. And this is what I love most about judo. All you have to do is set up one big move and execute it and the match is over. Since either player can lose the match in the blink of an eye, a certain level of excitement is added that one does not really find in other sports. In a five minute match, it can be all over in 3 seconds or at the 4':99'' mark. I hope everyone is enjoying the new format of Sport and Film Annex. I encourage everyone to post questions and comments in in the comments box or shoot me an email and to like some of our pages on facebook.
