The Kungfu farmers of China

Posted on at

Waving sticks and walking like warriors, villagers in Tianzhu county, Guizhou Province, are not only living by farming, but also by practicing martial arts.

In this village, not only are middle-aged men athletic enough to run along gravel roads, but the elderly are also able to easily cross a single-plank bridge with baskets of goods carried on their back.

This tradition has been handed down from generation to generation. The reasons why they are obsessed with practicing martial arts come from two folklores.

One piece of folklore says there were beasts in the past who frequently intruded into the village to kill people so the six main clans selected some teenagers to practice Kungfu.

However, another legend explains that these villagers were often bullied by people from other villages, so they invited Kungfu masters to instruct them on martial arts.

Nowadays, the children have joined them to start the tradition anew.
