The singing sand dunes of the Gobi desert

The Gobi is one of the largest desert regions in Asia. Mountains, grasslands and the steppes of Mongolia cover the Gobi desert. The desert varies in ecology and geography due to the climate variation and it’s topography. The formation of the desert is largely due to the Himalayas on one side. They block the rain water carrying clouds and prevent them from reaching the desert. It is also popularly known as a rain shadow desert.

Gobi national park was founded in the year 1993 and covers an approximate area of 28,000 square kilometers.

One of the most famous attractions of the park is the Khongoryn Els - Singing Sands. These dunes stretch as tall as 350 meters and are very impressive. The reason they are called as singing sands is the whistling sounds they make when the wind passes over them. The best time to visit the Khongoryn Els, Gobi desert, Mongolia is either in the early morning or sometimes in the evening. This will ensure some cool breeze and shall make the journey pleasurable. The dunes appear as far as the eyes can see. The dunes offer an excellent incentive for photographers who sometimes climb them to capture some magnificent scenic beauties.
