There’s A Science Behind Why Working Before 10 AM Is Absolute Torture

Posted on at

It’s 08:24am, I am here writing about why doing work before 10am is difficult. I would laugh at the irony but my shoes are wet and it’s too early for things to be funny. I want to be back at home in bed with my girlfriend who looks and feels suspiciously like a hot water bottle.

It is apparently biologically unnatural to wake up before 10am, so when you’re in the kitchen trying to spoon washing powder into your shrieking child’s face, that’s the fault of science. Your body just doesn’t function properly before that ungodly hour.

Getting up earlier than 10 also seems to create illness, stress and exhaustion in employees.Said Dr. Paul Kelley of Oxford University, who thinks forcing to staff to work before 10AM is equivalent to ravages of torture.
He continued to go into the details in an interview with The National Post:
Before the age of 55, the circadian rhythms of adults are completely out of sync with normal nine-to-five working hours, posing a “serious threat” to performance, mood and mental health.

Dr. Kelley believes there needs to be a drastic change to our working schedule and also school starting times. This would of course mean having to finish work or school later, which isn’t ideal. So really it’s a double edged sword of mediocrity.

Staff are usually sleep deprived. We’ve got a sleep-deprived society. It is hugely damaging on the body’s systems because you are affecting physical emotional and performance systems in the body. Your liver and your heart have different patterns and you’re asking them to shift two or three hours. This is an international issue. Everybody is suffering and they don’t have to.” If we look at the connections between the human body, Earth, and the light from the sun’s natural rhythms, it isn’t really possible to change its 24 hour cycle. Later start times should affect every aspect of society, including prisons and hospitals. In these settings, people are usually woken up and given food they do not want. You’re more biddable because you’re totally out of it. Sleep deprivation is a torture.Dr. Kelley continued.
So basically we should all just be like Sweden where they only work for six hours a day and spend the rest of the time making miserable crime dramas. Sweden also has the second highest ranking education system in the world so maybe they really are onto something.
