This dolphin-like animal is one step closer to extinction in China

Posted on at

This adorable, dolphin-like creature is actually called the Yangtze finless‪#‎porpoise‬, which inhabits in the lower reaches of China’s Yangtze River. However, although the animal has been around for over 2,500 years, it could be entirely wiped out in the next ten years.

China now has only a total of 1,040 finless porpoises left in the Yangtze River, according to the ‪#‎WWF‬, which is critically endangered due to overfishing, pollution and ship movements.

The annual decline rate of 13% means these animals are expected to become extinct within 10 years if no effective conservation measures are taken, it says.

Last year, China's Ministry of Agriculture classified the species as a 'National First Grade Key Protected Wild Animal,' the strictest classification available by law, in a bid to save its numbers from further decline.
