This One Exercise Will Predict How Long You'll Live

Posted on at

If you don't have time to exercise and don't eat as well as you should, chances are all that has taken a toll on your health. But how much damage did you do? Dr. Claudio Gil Araujo from Brazil invented an exercise that can determine how healthy you are and how many years you've got left.

It's called the Sitting Rising Test or SRT. Although a cardiac stress test gives doctors exactly what they need to know to evaluate the state of your health, SRT is a quick, at-home way to test your longevity.
Dr. Araujo developed the workout as he was observing older patients. "Many of them are able to bike or to run on a treadmill, but if you asked them could you tie your shoes, it's pretty difficult to do that. We realized not only aerobic fitness is important. You also need other things for your life: strength, flexibility, balance," he said.

The basic idea of the exercise is how well you sit down and get back up without using your arms or any other form of support. The results are based on a scale of one to 10. If you score below a three, you're in bad shape...very bad. "Your risk of dying is five times greater over the next five [or six] years," as reported by USAToday.com.

Sitting down and getting up sounds easy enough, but points get deducted quickly. If you use a hand and a leg, for instance, that's one point each. Lose your balance? You just lost half a point. For every point you score, "There's a 21% decrease in mortality for all causes."

Some important things to note. First, make sure you have comfy clothes and shoes on, or do it barefoot. If you have knee trouble, make sure you have someone with you. Now you're ready to give it a try. Scored a perfect 10 and you're over 50? You're in an elite group, according to Dr. Araujo.
