Tomato gives birth to bean sprouts

Posted on at

Take a look at the tomatoes you bought! Have you ever thought that a bean ‪#‎sprout‬ could grow from one?

Recently, this bizarre phenomenon occurred when a tomato had sprouts growing out of it in the city of Xi’an in ‪#‎China‬’s Shannxi Province.

A lady set aside some tomatoes she bought from a supermarket in the refrigerator, but was surprised several days later when she saw the stored tomatoes had bean sprouts growing out of them.

“I was totally terrified of the bean sprouts in tomatoes because I never saw this before,” she said.

The sprouts really appear to be bean sprouts, which are a main dish in Chinese cuisine. However, they are actually what the seeds in tomatoes eventually become, said an expert from the Food Safety Center of the Xi’an Nutrition Society.

Seeds are likely to sprout when the temperature, humidity and maturity all take place at the right time. The sprouts may lessen the nutritional value in the tomatoes, but they’re still edible, the expert added.
