UFC discusses 2014; NY ponders legalizing MMA

Posted on at

The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) recently held a press conference at Madison Square Garden in New York City releasing the economic impact if Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) events were held in New York State. During the conference, Zuffa CEO Lorenzo Fertitta mentioned the upcoming UFC events in 2014.

If New York State legalizes MMA it could generate around $135 million dollars in revenue for the state in just 1 year. The report bases its figures on at least 3 upstate fights and 2 downstate events a year as well as the establishment of MMA training centers. The report also estimates New York State would earn $6 million dollars in sales tax revenue.

State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver (D-Manhattan), who has undemocratically failed to allow the bill to come to a vote, said through a spokesperson that “we haven’t made any determinations at this point on whether the issue will be revisited in 2014.” Bouncer Chronicles has reported in the past that New York is the only state in North America where MMA is still illegal.
