Ways to apply for the IELTS test

Posted on at

Hi there! I am Lucien, an IELTS candidate practicing hard for a test scheduled in August. In the weeks to come, I will be sharing with you my IELTS revision strategies and thoughts on preparing for IELTS. Without further ado, let us first look at three common ways to register for IELTS.

Depending on the test location you choose, the application procedures will differ slightly. Nevertheless, it all comes down to four basic steps: providing your personal information, choosing a test date, making a payment and confirming a test venue.

To start your application process, visit IELTS online. Look for the test location drop-down menu at the top right of the page. You can also register your IELTS test through the British Council, which also gives you a lot of valuable information on how to prepare for IELTS. That’s what I did.

The most common way to register for an IELTS test is to apply online. In the following example, candidates from Laos simply need to provide the necessary information, make a payment and their test location will be confirmed instantly.

In some parts of the world, the test venue is confirmed at a later date. In Hong Kong, for example, the details regarding the IELTS test venue are usually given to test takers one week prior to the actual test, instead of being confirmed at the end of the online registration.

Some IELTS test takers may prefer to apply for the test through their universities if possible. Many universities require their students to hand in their application form (usually downloadable from the university’s website) six weeks prior to the selected test date, so check with your university if you wish to apply this way.
