National Fruit Cake Day

Posted on at

Today, December 27th, is National Fruit Cake Day.

Another food associated with Christmas is the fruit cake, and today is fruit cake day - near the end of fruit cake month. The traditional Christmas cake is a fruit cake served at Christmas, so this is one type of fruit cake you are most likely to have around at this time of year.

Christmas cake is not necessarily a specific fruit cake, but the most common ones tend to be dark and moist. The cake is then often covered in marzipan, iced and decorated. Although fruit cakes are commonly given as a git in the US at Christmas, they are not normally called Christmas cakes.

A popular tradition in Yorkshire (and other parts of Northern England) is to eat Christmas cake with a piece of cheese.
