Has our definition of obscenity devolved in last few decades? This UN photograph from 1974 describes “A mother and child at a family planning clinic in Malaysia.” Does this photograph make you think more of sexuality, nudity or the mother and child and what may be important to their and our global/shared future?

 

Is this photograph considered appropriate today? Will we get lost in debate more over the image (some locals have become sensitive about breastfeeding and breasts in public), rather than the important/urgent issues that may be provoked by such photograph including maternal/infant health, “population explosion,” and simple bond between mother and child? Have we made sex and body so hypersensitive as to pervert dialogue on the ethics of health, hunger, ecology and life/death issues?
