Step 2 on How to Be Able to Do What You Haven't Done Before : Take Action (2/3)

Posted on at

Okay, so you’ve finally decided on doing whatever it is you know you really want to do (Step 1). Now how do you get it or get to where you want to be?  self_help

♦  How can you apply Step 1 in your Life?  ♦

I've written Step 1 which is Decide on Doing It. You can read on my previous blog. ☺

Now that you have decided to do what you haven't done before, you don’t just sit somewhere and dream of doing something without actually doing anything to do it. If you do that then you’re just doing wishful thinking with no intention whatsoever of actually realizing that dream. It’s up to you how to reach your goals but if you don’t have any idea how to start reaching it here’s something to start you off.  how_to

I. Decide, Research & Plan then Reach for Your Goals/Dreams.

  • You have to know HOW to get where you want to be or how to get it.
  • You need to find out WHAT are the things you need to do in order to have it.
  • It would be best if you can ADD A TIMELINE or a deadline. Hitting a goal or several smaller goals is so much better with timelines to help make that big dream achievable.
  • After you've done your research and have made a plan, take action.

IMPORTANT: Learn to let go of controlling the outcome. Remember that your timeline should still be flexible. We do not control everyone or everything so relax and just do the work. ^_^

II. You need a more specific or step by step process? Here you go:

  1. Write down your dream/goal.
  2. Break them down to small actionable/doable steps.
  3. Research about your goal/dream.
  4. Find resources so you can reach your goal/dream.
  5. Take the first step and go with the flow.

It definitely helps to write your plans down. Don’t just think of them, write them down. This process can become time consuming for some so it’s best to do this when you have the time. It can be anytime like when you’re waiting somewhere or are on vacation etc., as long as you have the time to do it, do it. Then you can print it out if you want and stick it somewhere you can always see it to remind you of it. Visualize it.

Once you’ve written them down, start breaking them down to small actionable steps. How do you do that? Find out the things you need to get to where you want to be.

When you’ve determined what you need and how to get there, find out how to get them, learn them, experience them. Once you have that, find out what resources you will need to be able to get them. People? Money? Education? Name it. The more specific you are the better.

  • People – Which friend, mentor or even enemy/competitor do you get in touch with or ask for help?
  • Money – How much will it take? What’s the estimated budget and how do you get it?
  • Education – What books, schools or seminars do you need?

All things considered, that’s how you learn to get to where you want to be or get whatever it is you want to have. Loved ones’ support can also help you in achieving your goals/dreams. However, even if you don’t have any of your friends’ or family’s support you can still do anything you decide on doing with the proper resources.

IMPORTANT: Do not forget to believe that you can do it in order to achieve it. If you do not believe you can do it, anything you do to get it will not make it happen. It will waste your time. BELIEVE THAT YOU CAN DO IT!

Once you've started taking action, remember to do something to achieve it everyday. Consistency is what makes people successful - consistency and persistence and believing in oneself.

Also, don't keep planning, studying or researching, TAKE ACTION TODAY. Watch this video to help stop analysis-paralysis in case you've gotten it. Taking action will not only change yourself, it will also change and probably help other people too.

How to Take Action and
♦  Apply What You've Learned  ♦

So let's take my examples in Step 1 and let me break it down for you.

I. How to Start Dieting / Losing Weight

  • Decide that you really want to lose weight and be healthier.
  • Learn how to start losing weight. Research the things you can do, people you can learn from, food/drinks you can ingest, etc.
  • Take action by exercising, eating healthy, being consistent in doing it everyday, every week, every month. Results do not happen overnight.
  • Make a note of your progress. This will let you know what still needs to be done or if you're still on the path you planned on.
  • After doing all that, surely you will then see results you've never seen before.

II. How to Quit Smoking / Drinking / Chronically cheating on or lying to other people

  • Decide that you really want to quit smoking/drinking and be healthier or decide it is time to stop lying/cheating to be a better person and have happier relationships with anyone.
  • Learn how to stop smoking / drinking. Research the things you can do, people you can learn from and seek help from, programs you can enroll to, food/drinks you can ingest, etc.
  • Find out how to control your lies and/or your cheating habit until you eventually stop doing it. Research the things you have to do, find people you can learn from and who can really help you in controlling this destructive habit, look for activities you can do or programs to enroll in, etc.
  • Take action by doing the recommended things you've learned and found out. Be consistent in doing it everyday, every week, every month. Results happen when you don't stop doing what must be done.
  • Always have a record of your progress. This will let you know what still needs to be done or if you're still on the path you planned on. It also makes you feel better when you know you are improving.
  • Avoid things that will make you relapse. It's like what happens after a relationship break up: no contact leads to moving on and progress.
  • If you start doing everything you've learned and continue doing it all the time people will surely see how much you've become a better, healthier and happier person.

Bonus TIP for Step 2:
♦  Do What's In Self - Help Books/Articles Too!  ♦

You can actually read all these things in specifics in several self help books/e-books and/or audiobooks out there. I’m just giving the condensed form to you for FREE.

Take action by using different tools like the SMART Goals, Kaizen technique for the lazy bones or read the 7 Steps to be Successful, etc etc. Find out which advice can help you achieve and do what you've never done before.

There are of course some things you need to take into consideration when following my advice. That’s in the last step of this series.

This is a 3-Step Series so I will be posting the last one in the coming days.

(Because over the past few years I’ve read all the self-help books I could and more, I’m sharing this with everyone. It’d probably make me richer if I wrote a book or do what Ramit Sethi, Tim Ferriss, Bo Sanchez, or even what Francis Kong is doing but I haven’t decided on that yet. Originally written in July 2013, I’ve edited and added to this for better understanding.
If this doesn’t work for you, you’re free to find something else that will. Remember: Take action after deciding on doing it!)
