For many people, robots are still associated with an indefinite and mystical future. But there is no need to look or wait for the future. Robots are used from children's toys, various useful product lines to medical. Here, robotic technology is already well advanced. Nursing, surgery, diagnostics, treatment selection are only a part of the medical field where robots are being used today. Robots assist, replace human hands, improve the work of medical staff, or simply become a great member of staff.

It was 2012, and IBM Watson AI was at the forefront of its fame. For the first time, people could see a computer that processes natural language. At the same year, one clinic in Cleveland announced that wants to incorporate this system into its doctors' business.

Using Watson to synthesize huge amounts of data and create hypotheses based on true evidence, it was hoped that the IBM Watson Health system will help doctors and students to make diagnoses more accurately and choose the best individual treatment for patients.

We, Watson Health, aspire to improve lives and give hope by delivering innovation to address the world’s most pressing health challenges through data and AI insights.

Some years have passed since IMB Watson health appearance. Artificial intelligence learns quickly. What has changed for Watson since?

Watson Health development

IBM Watson Health gains its power with each passing year. It becomes stronger and clever.

Complicated health problems like data quality interfere with Watson. Electronic medical data are often filled in with errors and are initially digitized for storage, and not for searching data in them. Finally, Watson training is a grueling process, especially because it involves human lives.

Finding quick answers to patients' problems has little to do with the game. Now Watson Helth has to gain skils for starting think like a truly good doctor. That is, Watson Health has to learn to draw accurate conclusions and diagnoses. or Watson to continue to progress, it will also have to keep up with the latest advances in AI. The biggest change since 2012 was the growth of deep learning - the AI method, in which the program self-learns using huge sets of tagged data.

Huge budgets were spent on virtual assistants and chatbots developments. Even such big companies as Google and Facebook started using them. I think very soon, Doctor Watson will become available to a wide number of users, perhaps under a different name.

Directions for use in medicine

It was the high data processing costs that were the impetus for the development of the unique IBM Watson system. It is capable of not only generating colossal volumes of medical information but also recognizing the slightest deviations in the health status of patients that even a highly qualified doctor with many years of experience can miss.

IBM Watson supercomputer enhances electronic medical record usability. To do this, scientists have developed a special tool called EMRA. A doctor can use this application to monitor the medical history of both one patient and his entire family, the medical history of other doctors, as well as data on insurers. Also, the application is synchronized with a fitness tracker, so the specialist has the opportunity to observe the most minor changes in human health. Such a cognitive system, having analyzed all the data, provides individual recommendations on the care of the health of each patient.

IBM Watson Health analyzes various types of medical graphics. A supercomputer can quickly determine the details and anomalies of any internal organs of a person. Combining graphics and multi-modal data, IBM Watson greatly simplifies the work of oncologists and radiologists.

The IBM Watson system helps doctors identify the role of a genetic factor in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer and rare pathologies. The system analyzes genomic data with an electronic medical record of a patient, filters information about the same diseases and, after processing it, transfers the data to a specialist.

A supercomputer helps dermatologists identify various skin diseases. The IBM Watson cognitive system analyzes images taken with a derma scope. If a specialist is visually able to make a diagnosis with an accuracy of 75%, then the cognitive system works with an accuracy of 94%.

The patient should not worry about the disclosure of his data. IBM guarantees confidentiality and anonymity.

The future of IBM Watson Health

In general, IBM sees the future of medicine as a close union of cognitive technology and the scientific apparatus.

Collecting and processing data using the capabilities of IBM Watson is far from the only task. No less important points are predictive analysis and help in making a diagnosis. As now, the company will focus on the following issues: providing an individual approach for the treatment of patients with any disease, especially with chronic diseases and oncology.

Work will continue in terms of finding new, more effective, drugs. The analysis of the genetic data of hundreds of thousands of hospital patients and healthy people will help in this.

In general, all this will help soon to increase the effectiveness of treatment of patients with cancer and chronic diseases, reduce the number of repeated hospital admissions, and generally improve the quality of health of millions of people.

On A Final Note

Already, IBM Watson is analyzing pharmaceuticals and helping pharmaceutical companies create new ones. With the help of a supercomputer, it is possible to reduce the number of erroneous diagnoses, increase the effectiveness of therapy and give a chance for recovery even to hopeless patients. Over time, the supercomputer is becoming smarter, which means that soon it will help prevent the development of diseases before they have to be treated.

In general, IBM Watson can help doctors by relieving part of their routine snapshot analysis responsibilities, helping to process and analyze such information. The ability to use additional data with information obtained during the analysis of images helps to make an accurate diagnosis with a minimum probability of error.

Given the successful completion of clinical trials, the new service will soon be able to fully assist doctors in their difficult business.
