I was just checking Yahoo and there was an article from The Week that asked the question of why Liberals hate Christianity. From the beginning that is a very stupid question. In the United States most liberals are Christians. The writer is trying to frame liberals as atheists which is still not a bad thing. I am an atheist and I am here to tell you that even atheists do not hate Christianity or any religion for that matter. I have gone to bat for the pope, for Muslims and for Jews so it is not hatred of religion.

What most atheists do hate though is the idea that a particular religion should be used in order to write laws in any country. Most of us feel that it should be your personal right to have a religion, but the key word in there is “personal”. We do not care that you think that the world is less than 10 thousand years old, we just do not want you to force that mythology on other people’s kids. We will laugh at you if you say that you believe that the earth is less than 10k years old, but in the end you have the right to believe it.

We do not think that you should have the right to discriminate others just because a book written by uneducated desert people tells you to. We believe in the separation of church and state so feel and think whatever you want, just do not expect everyone else to feel the same way.

And while we are at it, no we do not hate your god. It would be hard to hate something that does not exist. Do you hate Zeus? Well that is the same way that we feel about the Christian god.

So there; you have nothing to be afraid of. Liberals or atheists do not hate Christianity you paranoid loons. We just want you to keep thy religion to thyself. Is that really all that difficult?
