COURSE DESCRIPTION
The course is designed to provide students an overview of the management function and its role in organizations. The course is intended at highlighting the theoretical aspects of management and then translating these concepts into practical frameworks. Major focus would be on making students comprehend the functional areas such as planning, organizing, leading and controlling. Course emphasis is placed on the development of skills and knowledge needed to successfully manage an organization.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
Main objectives of this course are:
To provide a conceptual and theoretical knowledge about the important functions and activities of management.
To develop critical ways of thinking (analysis and synthesis) for evaluating and applying a variety of concepts and techniques in managerial decision making situations through case discussions and other experiential assignments.
To facilitate students to become an active creator of their own knowledge.
COURSE OUTCOMES
After completion of this course students should be able to:
· Define management and the management process and explain the functions of management in an organization.
Understand the importance of basic managerial process
Describe the application of planning tools in goal setting and planning.
Describe the eight steps in the decision making process.
Understand the nature and function of communication within an organization.
Discuss the functional role of human resource management in strategic planning and organizing.
Understand how to manage resistance to change, describe techniques for reducing resistance of organizational members to change and stimulating innovation
· Understand the importance of effective leadership for the success of an organization.
METHODS OF LEARNING
A variety of techniques will be used to enhance students learning for this course. These include face-to-face lecture, discussion, debates, exams:, cases, in-class group activities, out-of-class group and individual assignments, and Internet Research. Students are expected to come to every session having completed your reading and/or other assignments.
