I love movies from the 80s. The movies then had a certain charm to them, if you will, that you don't see in Hollywood today. I also like anything Michael Mann is connected to. Band of the Hand was exactly what I was looking for. The movie starts out with these different juvenile criminals getting caught and taken to jail. In jail, they're put into a special program where they are dropped out in the Everglades. In the Everglades, they meet the man running this program, a Seminole Indian (played by Stephen Lang. He's one of those guys you see in a lot of different stuff, but you can't remember his name). The first part of the movie is one of those wilderness survival/overcoming differences movies. Then, the program takes them to inner city Miami and it becomes one of those clean-up-the-streets movies like Only the Strong (Mark Dacascos). The last part of the movie is a men-on-a-mission raids on a drug factory compound. I found it to be a refreshing combination.

The movie's theme song was actually arranged and done by Bob Dylan (according to the credits). I had never heard it before, so I guess it didn't exactly become a hit. The rest of the music is what you'd expect from the 80's.

The main villain is played by James Remar, who looks very pale in this movie. He's a very good 80's villain, though maybe not especially memorable. Laurence Fishburne actually plays a bit part as one of the main thugs. It was the thinnest I've ever seen him before, I almost didn't recognize him. In the credits, they call him Larry Fishburne.

I gave the movie a 7 out of 10 (I always rate on IMDB, which has it at a 6.3 right now). It's an underappreciated movie that no one I know has watched.
