Berg - Christophe Durand

Posted on at

The purpose and process of painting are notoriously difficult subjects to discuss, but here, with Berg, Christophe Durand chose only key items to investigate, focusing the questions exclusively to his subject’s own style. The eponymously titled film is a simple, elegant investigation into the painter’s life, methodology, and practice. The film is concise and is aided by the artist’s intelligent and precise statements about her work. Sporting a traditional approach to short form storytelling, the film switches between details of Berg’s work and talking head interviews. Using sparse experimental soundscapes, the soundtrack evokes a sense of isolation and loneliness ubiquitous within Berg’s paintings. Despite an abhorrent translation, Berg’s statements are refreshing and insightful, referring to Paul Klee’s wisdom, “We go through places without seeing them. But beauty is everywhere.” The film is ultimately an artist statement visualized through film. However, since the filmmaker and artist are both talented, it becomes more than the sum of its parts.
