Bridge to Nowhere

""An interesting historical curiosity that is the start of a glorious walk""

The Bridge to Nowhere was built by Lord Leverhulme, when he owned the Isles of Lewis and Harris, when he was trying to improve the local economy. It was intended to make possible a continuous road of around ten miles on the east side of Lewis to Port Nis. The road was never built and the bridge leads to nowhere for motor vehicles but is the start of a challenging walk to Nis across peat bogs by the east coast of Lewis.

The early part of the walk is an easy track and, I suppose, we followed it for just over a kilometre. The landscape is lovely and the views are magnificent and we would love to return and walk all the way to Nis.

The bridge has recently featured in "The Chessmen", the final book of the Lewis trilogy by Peter May. It was the scene of a motorised scooter race.
