Dope becomes first feature film to accept Bitcoin

No matter how much money Dope makes when it opens on Friday, June 19, it will already make its way into the history books as the first film to accept Bitcoin as payment for tickets. Open Road Films, MovieTickets.com, and GoCoin have all made a pact to work together to make the digital currency a viable option for going to the movies.

“MovieTickets.com thrives on these types of opportunities,” Joel Cohen, MovieTickets.com CEO said. “It’s cool, it’s original and we’re going above and beyond the common boundaries to drive ticket sales.”

This isn’t just a clever way to make a film about tech-savvy kids more accessible to actual tech savvy kids, but also a kind of synergy that fits in with Bitcoin’s presence in the film itself. While main character Malcolm (played by fresh face Shameik Moore) might look like a ’90s throwback, he’s also a modern geek with a handle on all manner of app conveniences including Bitcoin which he and his pals contemplate using when forced into selling drugs after attending an ill-fated party.
