WHAT'S GOING ON IN THE WORLD OF ENTERTAINMENT?

• TORONTO BECOMES MORE EXCITING AS IFC BUYS SODERBERGH’S NEW EPIC - CHE

The film market at the Toronto Film Festival, which is closing its gates to the industry tomorrow, has been pretty calm since the start. However, the scene enlivened yesterday when IFC bought all the U.S. distribution rights to Steven Soderbergh’s four-hour epic, CHE.

Apparently, the buyers have been wary of making acquisitions during the festival, and many studio specialty arms as well as independent distributors left the circuit with empty hands. CHE is an ambitious film that most buyers were hesitant to lay hands on, not only because of its lengthy running time, but also the fact that it is in Spanish.

It seems like IFC made the right and the smart choice by buying the rights to Soderbergh’s new film. "If a movie is not an obvious studio release, there has to be an alternative. We’re more nimble, quicker and aggressive when we know there’s both short-term and long-term value. No studio wanted to be in a risk position with ‘Che,’ " IFC prexy Jonathan Sehring said.

This 1920 adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s novella is a masterful study of human psyche and character. It’s a must see for all the film buffs out there.

Synopsis: Based on Robert Louis Stevenson's often adapted 1886 socially conscious horror novella, this version stars the incomparable John Barrymore as Dr. Henry Jekyll, a gentle, saintly Victorian physician. However, when the good Dr. Jekyll meets the diabolical Sir George Carew by chance one evening, Jekyll becomes fascinated by the dark side of the human psyche. Further goading his imagination is the sinfully seductive Miss Gina, who arouses more of Jekyll's nascent sexual and sociopathic longings. Determined to explore the dark side of consciousness without endangering himself, Jekyll concocts a potion that transforms him into Edward Hyde, an uninhibited rogue whom Barrymore brilliantly brings to life with the help of only artificial teeth and fingers. Soon, Jekyll finds that it is becoming harder and harder to separate his two personalities, sending him into a downward spiral that seems destined to end with the destruction of his former identity.

This short film by the young Israeli director Lior Shamriz is a unique and experimental piece that puts two different stories that are told in two different styles.

The director explains that the film is the story of young people who don't know how to live, who try to revive values that lost their meaning, such as romance, nature and art.
