FRUSTRATION

Motivated behavior is always directed toward certain goals or incentives. The hungry animal is impelled by its hunger to seek food, the student who wishes to become a member of a particular fraternity tries to impress men in that group, and the aspiring concert pianist spends long hours at the practice piano

It is apparent, however, that we do not always reach the goals to which we aspire. The hungry animal may be prevented from searching for food the prospective fraternity man may be rejected and the pianist may never reach the level of proficiency required for a professional career. When such events occur, satisfaction of the motive involved is thwarted, and this thwarting or interference with goal-directed behavior is known as "frustration". The term "frustration", used in this way, refers to the circumstances that result in the failure of need or motive to be satisfied. The internal state of emotional disturbance that accompanies such events is termed "anxiety," "stress," or "tension."

Human beings constantly strive towards goals which gratify their biological and psychological needs. But what happens when their they are frustrated over a long period of time, that is, when they are prevented from reaching their goals?

Ordinarily a person experiences frustration when satisfaction of the important motive is not fulfilled. One cannot immediately and directly satisfy all of his wishes, wants and desires. As a result, frustration is inevitable.

In short, frustration occur when we are prevented from reaching a goal. When we experience frustration, we must either give up the goal or find another way to attain it, stress is produced. Therefore, frustration is the blocking of goal-directed behavior-blocking that may be total and permanent or partial and temporary.
