Heal yourself

Posted on at

"Heal yourself" is such an easy thing to say. But words are incredibly powerful, they should be handled with care. We are all prone to resentment, regrets or just that incredible sadness of things that already happened and cannot be changed anymore. Healing is a process that requires mostly one thing: time. If I could just show up tomorrow and say: "Ta-da-dam! Surprise! I am healed!", I would do it of course.
When we claim we hold the key for another person's happiness or path to follow, we are not only being unhelpful, but we also fool ourselves. Let me explain how empathy works: we identify ourselves with the other person's pain. The more similar we think we are, the empathy level increases. The more probable it is for us to pass through a similar experience, the empathy level increases. But unless the emotions the other person is experiencing are very well explained, what we feel is just a projection of ourselves. Easy advice is not helpful, actually the ideal approach would be no advice at all. If we care about someone that is struggling, we should just be there.
