HUYGENS WAVES THEORY OF LIGHT

Posted on at

CHRISTIAAN HUYGENS, A DUTCH PHYSIST, PROPOSED THE WAVE THEORY OF LIGHT . ACCORDING TO THE WAVE THEORY OF LIGHT, LIGHT IS A FORM OF ENERGY WHICH MOVES AS WAVES FROM A LUMINOUS SOURCE OF LIGHT.

EVERY POINT ON A LUMINOUS BODY IS A SOURCE OF DISTURBENCE ie ATOMS AND MOLECULES VIBRATE ABOUT THEIR MEAN POSITIONS AND THESE VIBRATIONS ARE PROPAGATED AS WAVES. FOR THE PROPAGATION OF LIGHT, HUYGENS ASSUMED THE EXISTANCE OF HYPOTHETICAL MEDIUM KNOWN AS ETHER FILLING THE ENTIRE UNIVERSE. FURTHER, ETHER WAS ASSUMED TO POSSES HIGH ELASTICITY AND LOW DENSITY. WHEN THE LIGHT WAVES TRAVEL AND ARE INCIDENT ON THE RETINA, A SENSATION OF SIGHT IS PRODUCED.

DIFFERENT COLOURS OF LIGHT IS DUE TO DIFFERENT WAVELENGHTS OF LIGHT HE PROPOSED WHICH IS ABSOLUTELY RIGHT AND IT WAS CORRECT ALSO BUT HIS THEORY GOT DUMPED BACK AS A THEORY WHICH DOESNOT EXPLAIN THE PHENOMENA SUCH AS POLARIZATION OF LIGHT, PHOTOELECTRIC EFFECT OF LIGHT, AND COMPTON EFFECT. BUT INCASE I TPROVED SOME PHENOMENAS SUCH AS INTERFERENCE, DIFFRACTIONAND COLOURS IN THE THIN FILMS.

THIS THEORIES MAIN CAUSE TO GET DISCARDED WAS THE ASSUMPTION OF THE UNIVERSE CONTAINING THE HYPOTHETICAL MEDIUM OF LIGHT AND HENCE THE THEORY WAS DISCARDED AND FURTHER SOME SCIENTISTS REDISCOVERED IT.
