Deadly train accident was reported in Kanpur in the wee hours of the day, when 14 coaches of Indore-Patna Express derailed. The location of derailment is reported to be Pukhrayan in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur Dehat district. At least 120 people have lost their lives, whereas, nearly 200 people have been left with serious injuries. The death toll is expected to further escalate. The relief and rescue operation is currently underway, with 5 units of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) still on the site clearing the debris.

The train accident has evoked sharp reaction from the political class and civil society. While extending condolences to the bereaved families, people have also demanded the government to fix accountability to prevent such lapses. Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu has assured that an enquiry team would initiate early probe and the guilty would not be spared at all cost.
