Middle Names and Cartoons Meant for Adults

Doc, Gilligan and Anita. Throw-backs to the 60's we rarely see on TV anymore? Nope. These folks can be seen nightly on some broadcast and most cable/sat. TV.
Robert Doc "Bobby" Hill is the only child of a conservative couple in Texas. One of the family favorites that still keeps the attention of the [AdultSwim] crowd of viewers who are sometimes willing to accept some pretty gross stuff. Yet decent enough that you could have small kids or family elders present, and never have to blush.

When I think of Gilligan, a goof-ball in a sailor hat comes to mind. But Gilligan is also the name of Family Guy's little evil genius Stewart "Stewie" Gilligan Griffin. This show has a lot of the "gross factor" mentioned above. More blue, less humorous and definitely not in the same class as King of the Hill, Family Guy has an unexplained resilience. Almost canceled by Fox, it was brought back and still runs on several channels daily. Personally, I think the spin-off the Cleveland show, and the related American Dad have better characters and plot-lines. They all use the same family formula, apparently copied from the Simpsons, so the characters are important in keeping ratings. The Cleveland show's cancelation is an example. (Personally, I enjoy the family from Stoolbend, Virginia.)
And the last middle name will throw off any non-fan. Steven Anita Smith is the smartest member of the Smith family. But his middle name seems to represent the disrespect he so often gets from his American Dad. The family lives in Langley Falls, Virginia. Steve's dad Stan works at the CIA and tends to rag on his nerdy son and liberal hippie daughter. Only his wife, Francine seems to "perform at or above expectations," as he once stated, but even she gets treated with some disrespect. While not recommended for the very young (or very old), this 11 season show still entertains and seems to be going strong. Maybe the alien in the attic and the talking fish, both contributions of the CIA labs keep things interesting.
There are more fun names and more fun shows, but those will have to wait for another time. So we can look forward to discussing those....Unless Stewie's quest for world dominance closes down all web access.
