Paralysed man - broken spine repair

Posted on at

Darek Fidyka, a Polish man whose spinal cord had been broken, is today walking with a frame thanks to pioneering surgery.

Dr. Pawel Tabakow of the Wroclaw Medical University has succeeded in regrowing his patient's severed spinal cord.     This is the culmination of years of research and experiment .

Dr. Tabakow took some nerve supporting cells from Mr. Fidyka's nose and injected them into the spinal cord , above and below the break. Then he took nerves from the foot and used them as a scaffold on which the regenerating nerve cells would grow.

Mr Fidyka now has some feeling in his lower body and is able to drive a car again. He continues to make progress.

The procedures were funded by the Nicholls Spinal Injury Foundation in the UK
