Russian (Suicide Squad

For a book about a group of garishly costumed supervillains who are working black ops missions for a shady government official, the Suicide Squad has always had a good grasp of politics, corruption and the implications of both. It was a pretty serious read, despite one of its main characters being a painfully stereotypical Australian larrikin wearing pyjamas with little boomerangs on them.

The first issue of Ostrander’s run sets the tone immediately with a scene that can only be described as the ‘No Russian’ of comic books. Except that this airport massacre features Manticore, a genetically altered villain who looks likeBlanka from Street Fighter with a grenade launcher in his tail. Which you could actually get in Call of Duty if you were willing to pay $25 for the DLC.

The Jihad, super powered terrorists for hire, invade an airport in order to get to Air Force One, merrily slaughtering innocents along the way. There’s a digital genie called Djinn and assassin with a sword that he can turn on fire at will because he is the luckiest man ever.
