Setting up VPS

Posted on at

I just did a reinstall on one of my servers and so I thought I would document my steps on how I set up the VPS for new users that might need help.

1) RDP into the server.

2) Open server manager. Click on Local Server on the left. Find IE enhanced security on the right panel and turn it off (Gyazo - 1e88e8e0ca3b8e2371877da8f3125b47.png). You can also turn off automatic updates if you want.

3) Download and install firefox (Download Firefox 30.0 - FileHippo.com). The latest version is not always supported by webdriver and so its a good idea to stay a few versions down. Right now, v29 and 30 are confirmed to work fine.

4) Optional but recommended. Turn off automatic updates on firefox. Tools>options>advanced>update

4) Install flash player (Adobe - Install Adobe Flash Player)

5) Install .Net 4.0 (Download Microsoft .NET Framework 4 (Web Installer) from Official Microsoft Download Center or Download Microsoft .NET Framework 4 (Standalone Installer) from Official Microsoft Download Center). Your VPS might already come with .net 4.0 installed, however its a good idea to check. Make sure you install .net 4.0 and not .net 4.0 client profile because your captcha submits won't work.

6) Install visual c++ 2008 redistributable (Download Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package (x86) from Official Microsoft Download Center). Swagbucks captchas might not work without this.

7) When opening an .exe for the first time, depending on your security settings, your VPS may ask you to allow it to open. This may screw with your bots, especially updater.exe the first time its run. To disable it, go to Control Panel -> Internet Options -> Security Tab -> Custom level -> Scroll down under Miscllaenous -> Find "Launching applications and unsafe files" -> Click on enable. That's all, I believe.
