Sharbat Gula:(Afghan Mona Lisa)

Sharbat Gula most famous (Afghan girl) was born in March 20,1972.When she was only six years both of her parents were killed during the Soviet Union,s bombing of Afghanistan.After their death along with her grandmother and her siblings walked across the mountains to Pakistan.

The green eyed Afghan girl who appeared on the National Geographic cover in 1984.She lived harsh life in "Nasir bagh Refugee camp" in Peshawar (Pakistan).Sharbat Gula was one example of the millions of people that were affected by war and lost their homes as well as families.

In 1984 when Gula was a school girl,her photo was taken by the journalist and photographer "Steve McCurry".He was mesmerised by Gula,s bright green haunting eyes intensely looking into camera.

 The picture titled "Afghan girl" wearing red head-scarf appeared on the June 1985 cover of "National Geographic ". It has been likened to Leonardo da Vinci painting of "Mona Lisa".

Unfortunately McCurry didnot record the name of Sharbat Gula when he had photographed but this photo become the most recognized photograph in the history of magazine and the cover become the most famous cover of the "National Geographic".

During 1990s  McCurry made several attempts to locate her but Sharbat Gula returned to her native country Afghanistan from the refugees camp in 1992.She married with her cousin "Rehmat Gul" between the age of 13 to 16.Rehmat Gul work in local bakery .

In January 2002,National Geographic team travelled to Afghanistan to locate her.Finally team locate her around the age 30,in Afghanistan and their identity was confirmed by John Dougman using iris recognition.

 She wear burqa and hesitate to meet with McCurry.Gula never seen the photo of herself until the National Geographic team found her again.She surprised to see her pic as a cover photo of most famous magazine she had no idea that her image had been seen by millions.She didnot know the beauty and power of her eyes.People told McCurry that her face alone inspired them to aid refugees.National Geographic also made short documentary about her life and dubbed her the "Mona Lisa of Afghan war."

Sharbat Gula was very young when she lost her husband at the age of 37.Her husband suffered with hepatitis 'C'.She has four daughters named Robina Gul,Zahida and Alia,the fourth one has died in infancy.

In April 2014,Sharbat Gula applied for Pakistan identity card by using the name of "Sharbat Bibi".She dodge and get an identity card like thousands of Afghan refugees.She had been arrested by Federal investigation Agency in Peshawar on oct 26 from her house.The court had sentenced her 14 days and also fined her 110,000 Pakistani rupees.

 

In one of his interview Gula said she never felt safe,but life under the Taliban was better at least there was peace and order.The magazine article described that "Time and hardship had erased her youth.Her skin looks like leather.The geometry of her jaws has softened.The eyes still glare;that has not softened."

 After competition her sentenced Gula deported to their native country where she warmly welcomed by Ashraf Ghani President of Afghanistan.

She thanked the president and the nation and also said that her life was the story of an unending pain. "I was a child when orphaned and then became refugee.I was 13 when my picture became the world,a famous one but I was unaware of it."

"I grew up,married and became a mother but was still a refugee fighting with poverty.The world show interest in my photograph and was unconcerned about my and children,s lives."

She also said "I am happy that despites all the troubles and fame in my life."

She also thanked Pakistan for hosting her family for 35 years.
