To ‘sock it to someone’ means to tell them bad news in a straightforward or direct manner.
‘Sock it to me! I’m ready for whatever you are going to tell me.’

To ‘put a sock in it’ means to be quiet. It is used to tell someone to be quiet in a forceful manner.
