Street lights are getting “smarter”

Our cell phones and homes have all got “smarter” in the last five years, but now it’s time for Chinese lamp posts to receive the “smartinization” treatment. A sophisticated street lamp post was erected on a roadside in Shanghai, this Tuesday.

The all-purpose lamp post, or “smart-pole”, not only lights the street but can charge your cell phone and electric car, let you get connected to Wi-Fi, give you basic information and monitor the air quality.

According to a CCTV report, the uses of the smart lamp post can be extended. It means that other functions can be added such as traffic lights and road sign posts.

As the “smart-pole” made its debut, it immediately caught the attention of the people in Shanghai and netizens as well.

“It’s cool. A mass of people will surf the Internet by phone around the pole. And will cars stopping there for charging lead to traffic jams? The smart pole will need a large sum of maintenance fees,” commented @Pingfandetangchaolizi.

“Drivers need to be careful, [don’t crash on it]because the pole may be worthier than cars,” joked @GuhaixiaoshuishouVIP.

“Seeing this good facility, I do not worry about cyber security or access to Internet but worry if vandals will mar it or not,” said @Machuanxinstrong.
