The beautiful Shyok River is also known as “the river of death” (in the native language) is a tributary of Indus River in Ghanche District of Gilgit–Baltistan, Pakistan. Find out more about this beautiful, mysterious river below.

The Shyok River, a tributary of the Indus River, originates from the Rimo Glacier, one of the tongues of Siachen Glacier. It then widens at the confluence with the Nubra River.

The Shyok River has four tributaries: The Chang Chen Mo River, Galwan River, Nubra River, and Saltoro River.

The climate along the Shyok River valley is semi-arid, with annual precipitation averaging less than 8 inches (200mm).

The daily temperatures in summer often exceeds 86°F (30 °C), whereas, winters are extremely cold dropping down to 14 °F (-10 °C).

6. Crystal clear river peacefully flowing by..

River flow and sediment load are the highest from June to September, when the monsoon rains and glacial melt-water reach a maximum.

7. A beautiful, tranquil view of the river..

Natural vegetation is sparse, incorporating short grass and scrub, but irrigation sustains fruit trees, wheat, barley, and potatoes along the Shyok valley.
