The Future Of English Language in Pakistan...

Posted on at

With the exit of the Britishers from Indo-Pak subcontinent . It was presumed in some extremist quarters that English language will also go to its native land soon but he deep roots which this language had stuck into the Pakistan soil from the beginning of this century , were hard to be shaken and the courese which the later events took belied the expectation of the narrow-minded nationalists who wanted an immediate replacement of this language by a language of our own.

In a very haphazzard way the Britishers devised the present system of education to produce cheap clerks to run their burreacuracy . English become a costly luxury with the result that knowledge of English meant high market value and prestige.

English has been facing opposition and bitter and unbridled criticism since the time of introduction in the administrative as well as academic field . this antagonism was further intensified when the nationalist movement gathered momentum. Finally it became an important item of the policy to disgrace the use of English and to encourage the spread of a common language and also develop the regional languages with contained a fairly herritage of literature.

The diversity of languages and dialects is so great in Pakistan that it was very difficult to choose a common language which could be granted the status of national language . After great deliberations, Urdu was chosen as the 'lingua france' of Pakistan. No body can deny the fact that it is against the national pride of Pakistan to retain the foreign language as the 'lingua france'  even after the exit of the British nasters. No body would suggest that English should continue to dominate  out educational system , our culture and civilization and our administrative setup.

It can not be denied that Pakistan is industrially and scientifically a backward country . we can not shut car eyes to the pressing need of technical and scientific education in our country and until we are in a position to produce scientific number of scientists and technicians , our development plan will go to dogs.

Owing to the change circumstances, the significance of the English language has declined greatly and it is being relegated into backward just as other Pakistani languages were done at the time of English. Almost all universities have made the study of Urdu compulsory at secondary levels. In certain universities, has been made vital part of their curriculum and one can not become a graduate without knowing much of English.

Still to keep the wheel of our progress going and to keep in touch with the best and latest of the present world, we will, continue studying this language.Even after complete changeover from English to Urdu we shall study English not as a tyrannous language of our rulers but with the spirit with which a foreigner takes  to the study of our national languages. It will not dominate our culture and civilization bit it will rather work as a source of inspiration for it and will elevate our national pride.
