The power of Nostalgia!

Posted on at

Nostalgia is something that I'm feeling rather a lot recently... Quite possibly because I'm about to leave home 'properly' my dad says, for the first time. (apparently Uni didn't count). And the fact im moving 4 hours away contributes also...

It's a theme that has often run through my films. 'the little things' had old home footage, significantly nostalgic to me, but I think it gave that feeling off also to others.

However, it's something I want to touch on again with future films, but perhaps with a more mature attitude towards it...

As you get older, does nostalgia grow and grow? Does the feeling get a little more selective on certain parts of your life only, or does the gap between preset day, and those nostalgic events just get longer?

Adverts certainly use it a lot. The 'never knowingly undersold' John Lewis is a classic example. Childhood running through to granmotherhood! Grabbed the emotion of a large proportion of the country.

Similarly the hovis advert, tried to capture the entire nations nostalgia for our past, running all the way through the ages, world wars, riots, swinging sixties, a massive nod to our history. Even the olympic opening ceremony ran through our past, old and new book characters, the nhs... The list goes on! But it's one of them feelings you know will probably always be called upon at big events... If its your own event, a family one, or the entire country.

There's an amazing blog at the moment, 'dear photo'. Look it up!

It inspired me to make a film... As I'm leaving home perhaps I should make a film based around photos like this one:

That's lady! My little dog quite a few years ago now. You can see my new stairs in the background... The shelves are gone, the carpet has changed, the walls have changed colour, even the banister has gone! But mostly, Lady the dog isn't there anymore.

And I think that one photo is able to say it all.

I think a film like this would be powerful! Even if just to my family and the people who know us, and our home. My parents have lived there for 35 years... So there's plenty of changes and differences that can be recorded. Even the addition of family members! Old babies grown up, and having their own babies, still walking through the same corridors and relaxing in the same sitting room... I think it's almost fascinating!

So this is certainly a, watch this space project. It's not something I can do over night, but something I wish I had worked on for the last 2 years... Maybe it will be a Christmas project now!
