The Story About The Different Types of Human Skin

Posted on at

I'm not a doctor nor a skin expert. But, as a person who is very conscious with my skin, I have been doing a lot of research or studies about the human skin and the ways to take care of it. I have learned that there are FIVE different of types our skin. That simply means that each of us has a distinct skin type.

Typically, the diverse skin types incorporate the Normal Skin, Oily Skin, Dry Skin, Combination Skin, and the Sensitive Skin.  Needless to say, all these skin types have contrasting features and because of that, each skin type has its particular ways of care.

Normal Skin

Women with normal skin type are those who have smoother, softer, and even skin tone. A normal skin is neither dry nor oily. This is basically the reason why normal skin is most wanted by a lot women. Commonly, this skin type has fewer problems on the face, minimal imperfections associating with pores, wrinkles and fine lines, and dark spots. Despite the fact that there's no so much maintenance on normal skin, it still needs a daily skin care routine.

Dry Skin

More likely being sensitive, Dry skin has the tendency to get irritated easily. Often, dry skin has a flaky texture and has that uncomfortable feeling of tightness of skin.  Dry skin, basically, is due to lack of moisture in the skin. This means that the skin's outer layers tend to lose its ability to keep the normal levels of moisture. Sun damage is also another reason of having a dry skin. Using items or skin products that has drying ingredients and irritating properties is also a factor of dry skin type.

Unlike normal skin, dealing with dry skin is more complex. Here are some tips enumerated on how to manage dry skin.

  • Using a gentle cleanser instead of strong toners is best advised. In fact, this is highly recommended to be done during the night than in the morning.
  • Skin care lines with “hyaluronic acid” has been found out to be great for battling skin imperfections like dryness of skin.
  • Facial moisturizers or other skin care items having "retinol" is also an expert-recommended remedy for dry skin.
  • Daily moisturizing the skin is essentially a wonderful way to prevent skin from getting dry overtime. But make sure to use moisturizers that have gentle or skin-friendly elements.

Oily Skin

Oily skin is probably the most challenging types of skin and not to deny, most unwanted by women  and ladies.  Oily skin is actually known as the acne-prone skin.  Such skin type is more vulnerable to pimples, acne and other skin breakouts like blackheads and whiteheads. This type of skin has overactive sebaceous glands, which secretes sebum in the skin and such generates more oily matter than necessary.

What causes oily skin, by the way?

  • Hereditary factors
  • Hormone levels
  • Stress
  • Unhealthy diet
  • Due to pregnancy
  • Cosmetics or makeup that are not suitable to the skin type

To help battle oily skin, it is best recommended to use a very gentle cleanser to the skin regularly. As much as possible, it must be a soap-free cleanser and avoid using cleanser and moisturizers having milk ingredient.

Sensitive Skin

Like the oily skin, having a sensitive skin is not easy. Sensitive, as a matter of fact, is an allergy-prone type of skin and is, for the most part, characterized  for having skin imperfections or disorders as eczema, rosacea, psoriasis, and other skin allergies. Especially when not handled with proper skin care, the skin will be irritated and get inflamed more often.

To handle sensitive skin, "cleansing, toning, moisturizing, and protecting from the sun" are the basic rules of doing so. And, make sure to avoid the following practices:

  • Cleansing skin with loofah or any rough textured cloth
  • Abrasive facial scrubs and cleansers
  • Alcohol or menthol-rich  toners and astringents
  • Facial masks containing strong, irritating ingredients

Combination Skin

From the term itself "combination", Such skin is a combination of two distinct types of skin - oily and dry skin on the different parts of the face. Combination skin type is illustrated by having dry skin on the cheeks and oily part on the T-zone, nose, chin and forehead.

Dealing with such skin type is difficult too because a combination skin must have a strategic skin care routine. That means, taking care of both skin types differently on the same face.  To manage combination skin, here are practical tips to follow:

  • Cleansing the face with gentle or mild facial cleanser
  • May apply on the oily areas skin care products with salicylic acid
  • Moisturize the dry part of the skin using oil-free skin care and must have sunscreen protection 30
