The Victoria Returns Home

Posted on at

On September 6th 1522 the Spanish carrack Victoria arrived back in Spain.

The Victoria was one of five ships that were part of the Armada de Molucca, commanded by Ferdinand Magellan, and was the first ship to successfully circumnavigate the globe.

The expedition had departed Spain in 1519 and met many trials along the way. The fleet started off with five ships and 235 sailors; by the time it returned it was down to one ship and 18 men. Magellan had died himself on the journey; killed in the Philippines. Matters were probably not helped by the fact that they had two years of provisions for the three year expedition.
