Turkish Angora Cat

Posted on at

A Turkish Angora is a beautiful, unique cat that is a great pet and easily adapts to an owner's schedule. A Turkish Angora is an interactive cat with a distinct personality and extremely silky feeling fur. The Turkish Angora is a medium-size cat that weighs between 6 - 11 pounds and is a naturally healthy cat, with an average life span of 15 years. A Turkish Angora is an affectionate cat that requires attention, affection, and human and/or other animal interaction. It is common for a female Turkish Angora to attach emotionally to one particular person while a male is equally affectionate and interactive with multiple people.

Origin

Excessive interbreeding caused the Turkish Angora to grow the softest fur of all types of cats. The interbreeding resulted with birth defects, one of which was a type of weak muscles that caused death as a kitten. The interbreeding became so devastating that the cat almost became extinct. Concerned cat breeders within a town in Turkey, once called Angora, implemented a safe breeding program for the cat, which other countries later adopted.

Kitten

A Turkish Angora kitten looks unlike any other kitten. The kitten looks like a very small ball of fur with 2 big eyes and ears. A grown Turkish Angora cat will often cause its fur to stick out in every direction, like a porcupine, causing the cat to look much larger than its actual size. A Turkish Angora kitten is so incredibly tiny that whenever around humans or animals the soft fur will extend outward in every direction causing it to look like a cotton ball that moves.

Looks

A Turkish Angora has a wide array of looks with over 20 different color shades and patterns with every possible eye color, even 2 different eye colors. The body shape is long and slender with extremely long legs, a petite triangular shaped face, and a very long plum tail.

Fur

The fur of a Turkish Angora is unique for several reasons. The cat is a long hair breed, but requires little to no brushing or trimming. The fur is extremely silky in a way no other cats feel as soft. During periods of warm weather, the cat will look like a short hair cat, but during the winter, the hair will grow extremely long and thick. A thick soft mane, which looks like a beard, will also grow under the cats chin and along the neck.

Jump and Climb

A Turkish Angora loves to jump and climb. The cat loves to climb tall cat stands, jump onto high shelves, and even jump on to the top of an open door. Turkish Angora cats will jump and climb every tall item in the house.

Health Risks

A Turkish Angora has a lack of health problems, and an extremely long life span. One inherent health risk is the fact that white Turkish Angoras with blue eyes are often blind. It is common for Turkish Angoras to have 2 different color eyes. It was once common that if 1 of the eyes were blue the cat would be deaf in the ear on the same side. Dedicated breeders, however, have significantly reduced, and in some cases eliminated the correlation between blue eyes and deafness.
