Week 4: CBS Station Promotion & Advertising

Posted on at

Hey everyone,

Sorry I was a little late in posting this week, I’ve been really busy…Well I can’t believe it’s already been 4 weeks of this internship. The weather in California is finally starting to shape up, and it feels like summer. The days are warm; the nights are breezy and comfortable. The only constant has been that I’m as busy as a bee.

My boss (Steve) got back from vacation on Monday. After editing some preview spots for Hawaii Five-0, and The Defenders the previous week, I was certain he’d come in and piss fire on what I had put together. After an early morning spent updating PromoNet and making phone calls, it was time for my boss to start getting the artillery ready. We went down to the Avid bay where we stood and watched my cut played on the big screen. After 30 seconds I hear; “Hm. Let’s see it again.” So, the spot was replayed. Then, the words came out of his mouth: “I like it, let’s see the fifteen.” (15 second promo). So, my editing big brother, Dan, played the 15. Steve’s face lit up (I didn’t know whether to run out of the room or bathe in my glory). “This is fantastic.” Suddenly, a drop of sweat rolled down my forehead. He asked me: “Are you looking for permanent work?” relieving the tension in the room. It felt great; he really liked what I had put together. I had never even touched an Avid keyboard.

Shortly after we got the thumbs up for Hawaii Five-0; Steve brought me into his office and we watched a cut of The Defenders. His face remained stone-cold. You could see he wasn’t pleased with how it turned out. Oh man did he scrutinize this one; we lacked in story, substance, everything. But you can imagine how hard it is to fit so much into 25 seconds worth of television. Then, he uttered words I will never forget: “Elliot, you’re a FILMMAKER. You are a story-teller. Go down there, and tell the story of THE DEFENDERS.” My confidence level went to Neil Armstrong heights in seconds: I literally fist-pumped my way downstairs to the Avid bay, and Dan and I compared our ideas and meshed our creativity to create the best possible spot.

I then got to work by myself on composing the third, and final preview spot for our new fall lineup: This time, for BLUE BLOODS. It’s coming together nicely and I’ll have a final cut soon. This week has been busy busy busy…but it’s such a blast. PromoNet has been re-designed and most of our new designs are online; were just going through the kinks and etc. In other news, I sat in on a voice over read as done by “the hollywood voice over dude”. I thought it was pre-recorded and I was laughing through the whole thing because little do all of you know, that’s how these guys really talk. My co-workers were looking at me like “don’t laugh, you’ll instigate him: he’ll just keep going” I just kept laughing, and laughing.

Thanks for reading, talk to you all soon. Stay tuned…
