Who am I....? (As a film maker!)

What sort of films... Are my kind of films? This is a topic of conversation that came up the other day. What are my favourite films, what sort of films would I like to make... And why?

I don't know whether it changes over time, Or it's changed since my last films even... But I think that the kind of films I want to make, are getting ordinary people... And putting them in unordinary situations...!

It strange, because I look back on my last films and I don't think this is reflected in those... However. Is that because I just didn't realise? Or is this why I used children... Because they experience new situations all the time, and that's what I focused on.

As time goes on, I've started to realise how essential it is to work out what kind of film maker you want to be... Because without really knowing this... How are you going to make films?

Often, when coming up with film ideas or brain storming, I witness people getting confused or frustrated about what message they wanted to portray... And perhaps this is the reason!

For myself, I've finally realised... And it wasn't hard to work out... My favourite films, and also the films id like to make all follow this type of structure. Armageddon, seeking a friend, the jacket, The Goonies even films like finding nemo! The films that stay with me, throw our heros into a situation they have never known, and we watch it unfold!

It's fascinating... And it's usually a real study of a character. And it usually makes us question ourselves also, which is something Id love to create.

This new discovery... Although a little late, has really opened my eyes... And it's something I want to concentrate on in the future. If I was back at Uni, and I had a deadline, and needed an idea... Perhaps this was the formula I needed!!!

My advice is, work out your 'thing'...! Watch films, work out which ones stuck in your head, ones you wished you had made and was still in your head months later, and work out a pattern.... and I reckon thats how you really discover yourself :)
