On 25 June 1975, the then Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi had unilaterally declared a state of ‘Emergency’ across the country; the ‘Emergency’ being officially issued by the then President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed under Article 352(1) of the Indian Constitution to tackle the internal disturbances created by the Opposition political elements in the country. It was withdrawn on 21 March 1977 so that it lasted for about a 21-month period. The Emergency was a black period in the history of Indian democracy and Mrs Indira Gandhi had to pay the price for it.
