Hi, I am back with a new blog. Today the blog I am writing about is related to my professional field. As I have mentioned in bio data of my profile that I have done BS Hons in chemistry. And now I work as a lecturer of chemistry in government polytechnic institute.  Chemistry is related subject of all the technologies so I teach chemistry to all the departments of the college. I give lectures to the new student of first year in college, so mostly student ask the same question, what is the role of chemistry in our technology that we are studying. They think that they are studying chemistry just to pass the exams but I satisfy them in a good way by explaining the relationship of chemistry with their technology. Many of my students also work on Bitlanders so I want them to know that how important is chemistry in different technologies and also to those who are getting technical education all over the world.

The use of knowledge of chemistry is being done since pre historic time. Its importance is increasing day by day. Consideration of the following pint will make it clear how important chemistry in present day life is!

1)      Structure of human body and different processes taking place in human body can be understood with the help of chemistry.

2)      For treatment of different diseases the medicine can be prepared with the help of knowledge of chemistry.

3)      With the help of chemical knowledge we can prepare better and cheap food and dress.

4)      Different life essential industries are based on the knowledge of chemistry. For example:

a.       Sugar industry: a use of natural resources

b.      Artificial fiber:  To fulfill the deficiency of natural resources by artificial means

c.       Steel: Mineral base industry

d.      Paint and Varnish: Some unnatural industries very useful in daily life.

These few line may help you to understand that chemistry is very important and is helpful to maintain the present day life.

What is the role of chemistry in different technologies?

Technology is a practical form of chemistry. As chemistry devise rule while technology provides us the instruments and means to execute these rules. Chemistry is equally important in all technologies. I have discussed all the technologies one by one.

1.       Chemistry and Civil Technology:

a.       This is a construction Technology and is related with construction of houses, buildings, dams, Road, Air ports etc. the commonly used building material for the above said articles consist of cement, steel, bricks, paints etc.

b.      The raw material of cement like, sand, lime, clay etc is converted into cement only with the knowledge of chemistry.

c.       Similarly steel is prepared from iron; from extraction of iron ore to preparation of steel a number of chemical processes are involved. In the same way bricks or refractoriness are one of the chemical industries as well as the quality of steel for different civil projects has a basic importance which is determined only by chemistry.

d.      Paints and varnishes are unnatural products obtained from various organic and inorganic raw materials with the help of chemical processes.

These few lines show how chemistry and civil technology are related to each other.

2.       Chemistry and Electrical technology:

Electrical technology deals with the electrification and related instruments of all walks of life. All the electrification accessories like wires, pipes, plates, switches etc are manufactured with the help of chemistry. It is an admitted fact that the electricity is one of our poor servants and it is only possible with the help of chemistry.

Similarly the flow of electrons is called current. It is impossible to study current and electricity and its use for human benefits without knowing the structure of matter, which is impossible without the knowledge of chemistry. To understand the concept and use of conductors, insulators, semi-conductors, electrolytes, and non-electrolytes is inevitable without chemistry. Electrolysis, electroplating, electro-metallurgy and the production of electricity from the lead storage battery is the excellence of chemistry.

Similarly the instruments used in electrical technology like tester, volt-meter etc and the material used for recreation and better living like refrigerators, microwave, AC, etc are prepared with the help of chemistry. More over Freon gas that is used in refrigerators and air conditioners, etc are the blessings of chemistry. In short the electrical technology will just be rubbish without the knowledge of chemistry.

3.       Chemistry and Mechanical Technology:

Mechanical technology deals with the study, operation, maintenance and working of machines. Machines are made up by metals or alloys and these are extracted or prepared with the help of chemistry. More over the lubricants are the souls of machines and these are prepared or synthesized with the help of chemistry.

Similarly the manufacture and use of paints, lubricants, abrasives, refractors, combustion and instruments like micro-gauge, Vernier calipers, files etc all owes to chemistry.

4.       Chemistry and Instrument Technology:

Instrument technology will no more be in force without the knowledge of chemistry as all the tools, machines, instruments etc that are used in this technology are all prepared with the help of chemistry. Metals or alloys make up machines and these are extracted or prepared with the help of chemistry. More over the lubricants are the souls of machines and these are prepared or synthesized with the help of chemistry.

Similarly the manufacture and use of paints, lubricants, abrasives and instruments like micro-gauge, vernier callipers, files etc all owes to chemistry.

5.       Chemistry and food technology:

Food technology relates with the production, consumption and preservation of food. It is only possible to understand the chemical aspect of food like carbohydrates, proteins and fats, its constituents like C,H, O, N etc and its structure, food value, energy stored in it, and its digestion in human body with the help of chemistry. Moreover all the food processing industries like milk, vegetable ghee and oil, soft drinks and ice cream etc are operated with the guidance and help of chemistry.

The production and use of different food colors and preservatives owes to chemistry. Similarly chemistry has helped us directly or indirectly to grow and process more and better food. Likewise the concept of hygienically pure food and balanced food can only be understood with the help of chemistry.

6.       Chemistry and refrigeration and air-condition technology:

RAC technology is mainly concerned with the refrigeration and air conditioning that includes different types of air conditions, refrigerators and freezers etc. All the materials that helps to make these products like body-steel sheets, paint, insulation, plastic parts, handle parts, cooling equipments, compressor, gases like CFC, R-12, R-22, R-134e, Ammonia, super dioxide etc, function of gases like condensation, evaporation etc: all are produced are studied directly or indirectly with the help of chemistry. In other words RAC technology will no more be in use without the practical application of chemistry.

7.       Chemistry and foundry and pattern making technology:

This technology is concerned with the castings of different metal and alloys into desired shapes. All the materials used in the foundry & pattern making i.e. kilns, refractory material, fuel, metallurgical processes etc owes to chemistry.

8.       Chemistry and Glass and Ceramic technology:

This technology deals with the preparation of different types and colors of glass and ceramics. To collect different types of raw materials and its fusion in the tank furnace for the preparation of glass owes to chemistry. Similarly the preparation of different types of ceramics and sanitary wares like glazed tiles, commode, washbasin etc are carried out with the help of chemistry.

9.       Chemistry and Auto Technology:

Auto technology is related with engines and its different parts. The composition of fuel, its combustion in the engines, material and working of engines and their usage can only be understood with the help of chemistry. Similarly other related instruments like screwdriver, wrench, different meters etc are made and used under the guidance of chemistry.

10.   Chemistry and Electronic Technology:

The concept of conductors and semiconductors is better understood in this technology because the development and use of silicon and Germanium as semiconductors has revolutionized the electronic industry. Moreover all the electronic circuits that are made on the Bakelite plate are prepared by the ‘etching processes –a chemical reaction. A number of electronic instruments like radio, TV, VCR, VCD, DVD, cellular phones, satellite system, wireless communication etc has gained a tremendous popularity in these days, and it is only because of chemistry.

11.   Chemistry and printing and graphic arts technology:

This technology deals with the print media. It utilises paper of different kinds and inks. The preparation of paper, solvents and inks of different colors are the excellence of chemistry.
